The Duncan family submitted a petition to the City in honor of, James D. Duncan, Sr. They requested to change the street Field Ave to be named James D Duncan, Sr as remembrance of their father’s contributions to the Cleveland area. City Council approved their petition request at the September 2020 City Council meeting. The City Secretary’s office worked with the family and the City’s Public Works department to coordinate the ordering and unveiling of the new street signs. The unveiling of the street sign took place on Nov. 10, 2020 at 11:00 am. The family members that were able to come out met up with city staff, mayor and city council members at the corner of Linea Alfred and James D Duncan Ave (formerly Field Ave) for the unveiling. James and Johnnie (his wife) Duncan resided on this street known as Field/Smith Clev Block L for more than fifty years. Mr. Duncan passed away in 1988 and Johnnie died in 1996. Their address was 508 Field and was a place where people were welcomed, kids came and had a safe and fun time. Mr. James Dallas Duncan Senior was also instrumental in providing economic enhancement to the City of Cleveland with the provision of transportation to many that worked with the Brown and Root Company. Without his providing of transportation, many “breadwinners” would not have had the financials to take of their families. Many of the members of these families have gone on to represent the City in professional sports, doctors, lawyers and many other industries.
